Fellowships for Threatened Scholars: Call for Applications

Fellowships for Threatened Scholars
Applications due February 2, 2015 Apply Now

The Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) announces a February 2 deadline for its next round of applications from scholars facing threats to their lives or academic work. Fellowships support temporary academic positions at colleges, universities, and other research institutions outside the scholars' home countries anywhere in the world.

IIE-SRF formalizes an unwavering commitment to preserve the lives, voices, and ideas of scholars around the globe. Since IIE-SRF's founding in 2002, the program has awarded fellowships to nearly 600 scholars from 52 countries, arranging visiting academic positions at more than 300 partner institutions in 40 countries.

Who can apply:

Professors, researchers, and public intellectuals from any country, field, or discipline may apply. Please refer eligible candidates and forward this announcement to any academic colleagues who may be interested.

  • Qualifying applicants are currently facing or have recently fled from direct and immediate threats.
  • Preference is given to scholars with a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in their field, and who have extensive teaching or research experience at a university, college, or other institution of higher learning.
  • Women and scholars from under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Students or professionals seeking funding to pursue academic studies or training are not eligible.

Information on eligibility, criteria, and the application process can be found here.

How IIE's Scholar Rescue Fund works:

IIE-SRF fellowships support visiting academic positions for up to one calendar year. Awards are issued for up to US $25,000, plus individual health insurance coverage.

Fellowships are disbursed through dedicated host partners, which provide direct support and a safe haven for IIE-SRF fellows. In most cases, hosts match the IIE-SRF fellowship award by providing salary / stipend support and other in-kind assistance that would make the scholar's appointment comparable to other visiting academic positions.

For consideration in March 2015, please submit application materials by Monday, February 2, 2015.

Please note that IIE-SRF fellowships are awarded quarterly on a rolling basis. Applications are accepted at any time and can also be considered on an emergency basis.

Fwd: civil society recommendations

The Peshawar massacre is one of the deadliest and inhuman acts which ultimately forced us to unite against the menace of extremism and terrorism....
> Following are some recommendations for national action plan from Civil society to government and high ups...
> 1. We demand Drastic educational reforms...
> Govt must design uniform syllabus, curriculum and uniform text books for all public and private schools from the very beginning to university level after consultation with all stake holders keeping in view the importance of mother tongue..
> 2. Govt should Eliminate all literature which is spreading hate, polarization and disintegration in society. Special task force is required to assist all the available literature in market.
> 3. FATA Reforms.
> FATA must be merged in settle area of KPK after consultation with stake holder and drastic reforms are needed in this regard.. i.e educational, political and economic reforms.. All laws of the land must be applicable to FATA.
> 4. Sealing and fencing of pak-afghan border.
> Fence and mine every inch of the Pak-Afghan border. The trade routes must be religiously guarded to ensure that even a bird cannot cross without valid documents. If, centuries back, China could build the
> China wall to defend itself against foreign aggression and if the Allies could build
> the Berlin wall, we can do it as well. The terrain is nowhere harsher than Siachin.
> Those who are still talking about Durand Line as an artificial boundary must be
> taken to task or else the creation of Pakistan must be opened to debate.
> 5. Reformation of foreign policy.
> we need clear, transparent and independent foreign policy which is based only on the interest of Pakistan.. Govt should take all stake holders into confidence after consultation with them..
> 6. Soil of Pakistan must not be used for any conspiracy against neighbors..
> 7. Madrasa reforms.
> All madrassas must be nationalized and a uniform syllabus must be formed for all madrasas after consultation with all schools of thoughts. State should not privatized religion so that ambitious people could not exploit it for personal gains...
> 8. NACTA:
> The role of NACTA must be enhanced and more funds should be allocated to the authority...NACTA must be a central anti terrorism authority..It must be independent and control and supervise all 33 law enforcement agencies...
> 9. Legislation on hate speeches:
> Parliament should Legislate to ban use of loudspeakers in the mosques with immediate effect. The misuse of loudspeaker in the mosques is akin to allowing indoctrination of the masses. This misuse has become an abuse especially in the rural areas where extreme illiteracy coupled with the endemic poverty have turned the rural folks, as a matter of fact, slaves to the whimsical interpretations of religion of the ill-educated clerics.
> 10. Govt must send back All non-registered afghan refugees living in Pakistan.
> 11. Reforms in judiciary and justice system..
> Govt should bring drastic reforms in police, investigation, prosecution and judiciary. a judicial conference should be conducted in this regard.

> Dr. zarina Hassan
